Tribute to an Artist

Robert Kusserow was a gifted artist with a profound passion for wildlife illustration. Originally from Pennsylvania, he began his career as a biological illustrator for the University of Colorado. Later, he worked as a commercial artist in Denver until 1974, when his love for nature and creative expression led him to the South Dakota prairie.
On the outskirts of Presho, a small town nestled in the heart of South Dakota's Great Plains, Kusserow transformed an old barn into Studio at the Barn. There, surrounded by the vast, windswept landscape, he dedicated himself to capturing the beauty of wildlife and the essence of the natural world.
His talent earned him recognition in wildlife art competitions across the region. In 1976, his painting of a pair of mallards was selected as the winner of the inaugural South Dakota Migratory Bird Stamp contest. The following year, the South Dakota Pheasant Congress honored his work Swinson's Farm - Ringneck Pheasant by choosing it for the 1978 South Dakota Pheasant Restoration Stamp. His achievements extended beyond South Dakota. In 1985, his depiction of a Canada Goose was selected as the very first Conservation Stamp for the state of Wyoming.
Robert Kusserow’s acrylic paintings are known for their meticulous attention to detail, a hallmark of his work that brought wildlife to life on canvas. His ability to capture the intricacies of nature, particularly birds, earned him recognition as one of the country’s foremost modern wildlife artists. His art reflects not only technical mastery but also a profound respect for the natural world, leaving an enduring impression.
